Dark Mode Extension Not Working? 7 Fixes That Cover Almost Every Case

A page stays white, one site refuses to go dark, or the extension stopped working after an update. Here are the causes in the order they actually happen, with a fix for each.

Dark Mode Extension Not Working? 7 Fixes That Cover Almost Every Case

Most "dark mode not working" reports are one of three things: the page is one Chrome refuses to let extensions touch, the site already has its own dark theme and is being skipped on purpose, or the tab was open before you installed the extension and needs a reload. Work down this list in order and you will land on the cause quickly.

1. The page is one Chrome blocks

Chrome does not allow any extension to run on its own pages. These always stay light:

  • chrome:// pages — settings, history, downloads, the new tab page
  • The Chrome Web Store itself
  • Other browser add-on stores (Edge Add-ons, Firefox Add-ons)
  • view-source: and devtools: pages

This is the single most common complaint about every dark mode extension, and no extension can fix it.

Fix: none available. Chrome's own interface has a separate dark setting in Settings → Appearance.

2. The tab was already open when you installed

A content script only runs on pages loaded after the extension was. Tabs that were already open when it installed are adopted, but a page in an unusual state can miss that.

Fix: reload the tab (F5), or close and reopen it.

3. The site already has a dark theme, so it is being skipped

If a site ships its own dark theme, inverting it would turn it bright. So the extension measures what a page actually paints and leaves the already-dark ones alone. It reads the page's declared color-scheme, samples a grid of points across the viewport, works out whether a half-and-half page is dark at the backdrop or in bands, and falls back to the colour of the text when nothing paints a background at all.

Fix: none, and that is deliberate. The verdict is a measurement rather than a preference, so there is no override to set. If a page is genuinely light and still gets skipped, that is a bug in the detector and worth reporting.

4. The switch is off

There is one switch and it is global. If one tab is bright, they all are.

Fix: click the extension's button in the toolbar. If you cannot see it, click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin GoDarkMode first.

5. PDFs, the new tab page and some embedded frames

A few things inside a normal tab are not ordinary web pages:

What you are looking at Why it can behave differently
A PDF Chrome renders PDFs in its own built-in viewer, not as a web page
Cross-origin iframes Embedded frames from another site load their own copy of the extension, and only if that frame's site is switched on
Canvas- or WebGL-rendered apps The page draws pixels directly; there are no colours to restyle
Video players Deliberately left alone so films are not inverted

Fix: none for PDFs and canvas apps. For iframes, switching the embedded site on usually resolves it.

6. It worked, then stopped after a Chrome update

Chrome occasionally changes how extensions register their scripts. If dark mode suddenly stops on every site at once:

  1. Open chrome://extensions and check the extension is still enabled.
  2. Toggle it off and on. That re-registers its stylesheet.
  3. If nothing works, remove and reinstall. Nothing is lost: the only thing stored is whether the switch is on.

7. Colours look wrong, not missing

There are no settings to adjust, so this is either expected behaviour or a bug. Which one depends on what you are seeing:

What you see What it is
The background is very dark grey, not pure black Expected. The floor is #121212, because white text on pure black is harsher than any hand-built dark theme goes
A photo looks like a negative A bug. Images, video, canvas, embeds, frames and large CSS background photos are all meant to be flipped back
A dark header has turned into a pale slab A bug. Dark bands on a light page are meant to be detected and kept dark
Icons have turned the wrong colour Monochrome glyphs are inverted with the text on purpose; coloured inline SVG keeps its own colours

Still stuck?

Send the exact address of the page to [email protected]. The site itself is usually enough to reproduce a problem, and page addresses are the only thing we can act on. The extension collects nothing, so we cannot see anything from your browser.
