We do not collect any data. GoDarkMode runs entirely inside your browser. It makes no network requests of any kind, so there is no server to send anything to, and we have no way to see the sites you visit.
What we collect
Nothing. The extension does not collect, store, transmit or sell any personal information. It contains no analytics, no advertising and no tracking code, and it never contacts a server, ours or anyone else's.
What is stored, and where
One thing: whether the switch is on or off. The extension has no settings and no popup, so there is nothing else to save. It also keeps a short-lived note of which pages it has judged to be already dark, so it does not have to measure the same page twice.
Both are held in your own browser profile, in Chrome's local extension storage. They stay on this device, they are never sent anywhere, and we never see them.
Permissions, explained
- Site access on the pages you visit — the only way to restyle a page is to run on it. The extension applies its dark stylesheet before the page is painted and checks whether the page is already dark. It does not read page text, form input or your browsing history, and it sends nothing anywhere.
- Scripting — to register and update that stylesheet.
- Storage — to remember whether the switch is on.
- Tabs — to keep the toolbar icon showing the right state as you move between tabs, and to apply the switch to tabs that are already open.
Because the extension runs on the pages you open, Chrome's install prompt says it can “read and change your data on all websites”. That is the permission it needs to do its job, and nothing in the extension acts on it beyond applying a theme.
Pages it never runs on
Chrome does not allow extensions on its own pages, so chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store and other browser add-on stores are never touched.
Children
The extension is suitable for all ages and collects no information from anyone, including children.
